What is LOLER?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) require that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked, and subject to statutory periodic thorough examination.
As an employer or self-employed person, you have legal duties under LOLER to ensure that lifting equipment is thoroughly examined at regular intervals by a competent person.
Inspection Frequencies:
- Every 6 months - Equipment used for lifting people (MEWPs, cherry pickers, scissor lifts)
- Every 12 months - All other lifting equipment (forklifts, cranes, hoists)
Failure to comply can result in prosecution, fines, and invalidation of insurance cover.
